Anti allergic medication

Anti allergic medication may help to reduce symptoms of hay fever. It is generally recommended that these medications are taken every day during the pollen season regardless of symptoms, but always ensure you follow your healthcare professional’s advice on how and when to take medication.

These medications include antihistamines, nasal sprays and eye drops.

Many anti allergic medications are available in shops and pharmacies though some are by prescription only.

Immunotherapy

This well established treatment is suitable for people who cannot control their allergy symptoms using anti allergic medication. Also known as ‘desensitisation therapy’ it addresses the underlying cause of your allergy and not just the symptoms. As a result it provides long term relief and improves your quality of life.

Immunotherapy works by stimulating a protective immune response in the body that should reduce or even prevent allergic symptoms to a particular allergen, such as grass pollen. Immunotherapy may be given by subcutaneous injections or sublingually (drops/tablet under the tongue) for a period of 3 -5 years.
